About Sarah
Sarah Dowland is an award-winning filmmaker driven by a passion for impactful storytelling. Her recent feature documentary, ‘Sue Bird: In The Clutch,’ is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024.
Dowland's unique background spans over two decades working internationally in visual effects, animation, and production on projects including the Matrix trilogy and the Harry Potter franchise. This technical expertise, honed while collaborating with top creative talents, informs her interdisciplinary approach.
Transitioning into the documentary world, Dowland leveraged her skills integrating compelling graphics and animation to bring salient stories to life. As a producer on ‘Zero Days,’ which won a Peabody Award, she demonstrated her commitment to unraveling complex and covert global stories.
Driven to elevate marginalized voices and spotlight injustice, Dowland delved into the American criminal justice system in Netflix’s ‘Innocence Files,’ to tell the story of Kenneth Wyniemko, who spent 10 years in prison for a heinous crime he didn’t commit. Building trust is at the core of her work and elicits authenticity from her subjects.
Sue Bird: In The Clutch represents Dowland’s focus on telling compelling stories about women and she is thrilled to have her Sundance debut with this film.
